本片是1922年 Dr. Mabuse, the gambler 的延續篇，整體尚算不俗，某些追逐戲更甚是可觀，但某些情節有點牵強，例如片中博士想除掉叛徒，突然不像其以往那般直接了當殺人，而是先找人將其挾持，鎖在一房間裡，再宣布在幾個小時後會被炸死，（該叛徒最後當然係幸免於難，助警破案），呢啲牵強情節，予人“搵戲嚟做”之感，同時亦削弱了片中罪惡博士的狡滑睿智形象，另外片末罪惡博士突然變瘋，也很突兀，欠缺說服力。
抛除以上缺點，其他方面製作精良，爆炸場面、化工廠大火等特技場面處理出色，片中還常常流露出對社會的失望，對人性的悲觀，罪惡的無日無之，作為早期的黑色電影，本片還是值得一睇。

有評論家認為此片為luis buñuel最差的作品，原因是影片裡面意指多，但缺乏主旨，但我認為luis buñuel其實係想盡量避免過於主觀，所以才沒有過多反應自己的觀點，而是將"宗教是否應信"的正反論點，一一帶出，由觀眾自己去判斷，正如影片結尾所聲稱: 所有關於天主教以及其異端的言論，都是經仔細考究過的，並非虛構。　或者說此片反映了luis buñuel對"宗教是否應信"充滿矛盾情緒，亦說得通。

月初睇過同類故事嘅 the king of kings，相比之下，pasolini 喺本片嘅導技明顯不及佢嘅前輩 cecil b. deMille，故事編排缺乏技巧，選角方面亦不覺認真，結尾耶穌遭處死嗰幕更顯草率，另外令人驚奇嘅係耶穌遭處死時天搖地動、山崩地裂嘅特技效果，竞然還比不上差不多四十年前默片時期嘅同類作品 the king of kings (1927)

呢部戲首先衰喺casting，除咗 harrison ford 嘅演出算係拍得住原版嘅 humphrey bogart 之外，julia ormond 飾演嘅 sabrina 同埋 greg kinnear 嘅花心少爺，無論外形同演技，都遜色於原版嘅 audrey hepburn 同 william holden，此外喜劇情節嘅處理，亦明顯不及原版。　我諗如果 sabrina 攺由 penelope cruz 擔演（口音方面或者可經配音解決），花心少爺攺由 sean penn 嚟做， 效果可能會好好多。
本片導演 sydney pollack 並非特別差勁，但人物塑造功力，無原版導演 billy wilder 咁深厚，例如佢嗰部 stalag 17 (1953)，人物眾多，但簡單嘅三言兩語便反映出各自嘅特色，不得不令人佩服佢嘅導技。
其實都有啲唔明一些導演點解會揀啲之前口碑唔錯嘅戲嚟重拍，（印象中不少重拍版拍得比原作更好嘅並唔多），唔通為咗票房？　最算票房好，但拍得比原版差，搞臭自己嘅名聲，下次拍戲少咗人睇，此消彼長之下，不見得搵多咗錢。　如果為咗證明自己嘅藝術才華不比前人差，甚至更勝之，除咗自信，最好有埋嗰個能力，如果唔係就真係自己攞嚟衰，作前人嘅陪襯品。
